Soak in the mountain life at Spring Creek

One building is wrapping up sales, another is launching them at new community at the heart of Canmore.

A mountain getaway or a way of life? Spring Creek, a new community next to downtown Canmore, answers both of these questions in the affirmative.

For Robert and Janet deKlerk, a Calgary couple who share a love of the mountains, Spring Creek was a serendipitous discovery on a road less travelled while coming through Canmore one day.

“By accident we turned left at the traffic circle and ended up in Spring Creek and didn’t know it existed,” says Robert about the community that is flanked by two creeks and offers a flat grade throughout. “We fell in love with it the second we drove in.”

Six years ago, they bought a condo in Rundle Cliffs Lodge, and just over a year ago they bought a second unit in Tamarack Lodge.

“We go out as often as we can,” he says. “But we also Airbnb and Vrbo them.”

The various buildings in the community have designations as either residences or short-term vacation rentals.

Robert and Janet, along with their grown children — son Ross, 26, and daugher Lauren, 31 — try to get out as often as possible to enjoy all that Spring Creek, Canmore and the mountains have to offer.

“We think it’s the perfect place for hiking, the perfect place for skiing, the perfect place to unwind and relax. It’s a quiet neighbourhood. The buildings are built better than anything I’ve ever seen. I am just so pleased with how the development has progressed. I hate recommending it to people because I want to keep it a hidden gem,” Robert says, half joking.

It’s also a place they plan on for their own future.

“My wife and I count on moving into Spring Creek when we retire,” says Robert, who works in food sales and his wife is a teacher. “We just don’t know into which building, but it will definitely be in Spring Creek.”

The couple not only take advantage of the great outdoors when in Canmore, but they find it an agreeable place for their volunteer project, raising PADS assistance dogs.

“We have two puppies that we raised simultaneously,” says Robert. “We keep them for two years, then hand them back in and start all over again with an eight-week-old puppy. We’re on dog No. 13. All of our dogs have been brought up on Canmore because we love walking around Canmore. (It) is such a hospitable place for people with dogs.”

Since developer Frank Kernick broke ground on Spring Creek in 2006, the community has grown to include condos, a hotel, an assisted living residence, an events space, and now many businesses and shops.

And with an eye to accommodations for workers in the community, a four-storey building with pod-style groups of bedrooms sharing communal kitchens is under construction.

Future plans for Spring Creek include developing the “gateway” to the community at the downtown entrance with two boutique hotels — a spa and a family-oriented hotel — linking in with the services of the Malcolm Hotel.

Sales are wrapping up at Black Swift Lodge, says Ann Ricord, senior sales associate at Spring Creek, with three suites remaining.

“They are the same plan — two bedroom, two bath, 1,252 square feet,” says Ricord. “The bedrooms are separated between the kitchen, living room and dining room, which is something that works really well for us. People like that separation. It’s a little bit more private.”

These third-floor units start at $999,000, with monthly condo fees just under $900 per month.

Many buyers have been Calgarians, with many looking to make Canmore home.

“Many who have purchased — because we’re a two-and-a-half-year build time — they are looking either to retire in the two and a half years, or making Canmore their primary residence, actually making the move from Calgary, working remotely or just taking the drive into the city when they need to,” Ricord says.

After Black Swift, where construction is already into the ground, there will be three more condo buildings and then townhomes lining the creek to finish up the community.

Mountain Lynx is the next building coming up for sale.

“It will be our first building that is a mix of residential and tourist. Of the 60 units, 31 will go to market in the tourist category (short-term rentals),” says Ricord.
