An annual competition that awards superior customer service provided by North American home builders has proved once again that Alberta always puts its best foot forward.

At the 13th Annual Homeowner Mark of Excellence (H.O.M.E.) awards, held Nov. 14 in Huntingdon Beach, Calif., 12 builders from across the province took 16 of the 23 awards, with six builders besting other Canadian and American companies to sweep every Builder of Choice category.

The annual competition showcases excellence in the homebuilding experience as measured by Customer Insight, a customer survey provider for the residential construction industry and subsidiary of Constellation Home Builder Systems. New home buyers are surveyed one month after possession and again at 13 months, providing performance data for home builders. To become a finalist, entrants must meet a minimum 70 per cent customer satisfaction requirement.

Calgary and area winners in the Best Customer Experience, single-family homes, include Aquilla Homes (five to 55 homes), McKee Homes (56 to 249 homes) and Cedarglen Homes (250-plus). In the multi-family bracket, winners were Homes by Avi (up to 115 homes) and Logel Homes (116-plus).

Builder of Choice Awards, based on feedback from customers, trade partners and the builder’s internal team, went to single-family builders McKee Homes, Cedarglen Homes and multi-family builders Cedarglen Living and Logel Homes in a tie.

This is the third time Strathmore-based Aquilla Homes has won in the Best Experience category. For medium-volume builder McKee Homes of Airdrie, it’s the fourth nod for Best Experience and the second for Builder of Choice.

Logel Homes has received a Best Customer Experience award eight times, this year tying with Cedarglen Living, a five-time Builder of Choice winner in the large volume multi-family category.

In Edmonton, Best Customer Experience winners were single-family builders Justin Gray Homes, Lincolnberg Master Builder and Cantiro Homes. Encore Master Builder and Cantiro were named Builder of Choice in their categories.

Colbray Homes of Red Deer picked up a Best Experience award for the Central Alberta region while Avonlea Homes and Stranville Living Master Builder of Lethbridge tied for a Best Customer Experience award for Southern Alberta.

Donna Moore, customer experience manager with Constellation Home Builder Systems, says competitors for Builder of Choice must have outstanding customer service and exceptional ratings from their trade and supply partners and employees. Builders must deliver on their promises and follow through on their one-year obligations to the homeowner, all while making their partners and employees feel valued and part of the team.

“It’s not an easy feat. We are so proud of the tremendous performances of our Alberta leaders,” she says.

The 2023 Customer Ambassador is also an Albertan — Nicole Westman-Jones — director of brand, people and culture for Jayman Built, a company founded by her father, Jay Westman, and grandfather Al Westman. This award is presented to an individual who has worked to improve the public perception of the residential building industry in the areas of customer experience.

The H.O.M.E. Awards were held in conjunction with the Build Smarter Annual Conference held Nov. 13 to 15. All winners are posted at homeownermark.com.
